What Is an AI Readiness Assessment? Process, Timeline, and What You Get
Before spending on AI tools, most businesses would benefit from a clear, honest answer to one question: are we actually ready? Here's what an AI readiness assessment covers, how long it takes, and what the output looks like.
Most businesses considering AI investment ask "which tool should we buy?" before asking the more useful question: "is our organisation actually ready to get value from AI?" An AI readiness assessment answers the second question first — and the answer usually reshapes the first.
The Six Dimensions It Covers
A thorough assessment looks at: strategy and leadership alignment (is there a clear business reason for AI, and does leadership agree on it?); data infrastructure (is the data needed for priority use cases accessible, accurate, and sufficient?); technology and integration (can AI tools actually connect to the systems your team uses daily?); workforce skills and literacy (do people have the basic AI literacy to use new tools effectively?); process suitability (which workflows are actually good candidates for AI, versus which feel like they should be but aren't); and governance (are there any guardrails for data use, output review, and accountability?).
What the Process Looks Like
In practice, this typically involves a small number of structured conversations with leadership and team representatives across the business, a review of the systems and data sources relevant to candidate use cases, and a short workshop to pressure-test and prioritise the findings. For most mid-market businesses, this takes two to four weeks — not months. It is deliberately scoped to be fast enough that it doesn't become its own project.
What You Get at the End
The output should be three things you can act on immediately: a readiness scorecard showing where the organisation stands across the six dimensions, with the gaps that matter most clearly flagged; a shortlist of prioritised use cases — specific, scoped opportunities ranked by feasibility and impact, not a generic list of "things AI can do"; and a roadmap with a realistic sequence and timeline for the first 90 days, six months, and beyond.
Why This Step Gets Skipped — and What It Costs
Readiness assessments get skipped for an understandable reason: they feel like a delay when there's pressure to "do something with AI" now. But the businesses that skip this step and go straight to tool deployment are disproportionately the ones that end up stuck at pilot stage six months later — with licences paid for, low adoption, and no clear next step. A two-to-four-week assessment is a small fraction of the cost of a stalled twelve-month programme.
